Call to Prayer: Urgent Call to Prayer! May 2015

There are many groups making urgent calls to prayer... let's join in our families, small groups, and churches!

What do we mean by extraordinary prayer? We share ordinary prayer in regular worship services, before meals, and the like. But when people are found getting up at six in the morning to pray, or having a half night of prayer until midnight, or giving up their lunch time to pray at noonday prayer meetings, that is extraordinary prayer. It must be united and concerted.

Principle: Our need is the motive for our praying. When we know that our lives depend upon God’s provision, we will pray.

What is prayer? How do I pray?

Hundreds of Government Leaders Calling the Nation to Prayer

Throughout the history of the United States, its citizens and inhabitants have drawn strength, hope, and guidance from prayer. From the very first Continental Congress through every form of adversity and blessing, Americans have fallen to their knees and implored God Almighty to protect their families and to heal their land... On the 7th day of March, 2015, members of Congress and State Legislators from all across America gathered for the purpose of calling the nation back to prayer. they realized the need to call America back to prayer, not for a single day or a single month, but to pray “without ceasing.” Accordingly, this day we respectfully and humbly issue this “Call to Prayer for America” and invite you to join us in this call by adding your name, and further join us by praying for God’s continued blessing on this country.

The United States of America was born in and through repentant, wholehearted prayer. Prayer was the key to every major turning point in our history. Thomas Jefferson’s 1774 call to prayer to “implore the Divine Interposition for averting the heavy Calamity, which threatens Destruction to our civil Rights, and the Evils of civil War; to give us one Heart and one Mind firmly to oppose, by all just and proper Means, every Injury to American Rights…” united and readied Virginia to stand with the New England patriots in opposition to the British Crown. After the first shots were fired in April, 1775, the Second Continental Congress’ June call for united prayer brought all thirteen colonies to their knees before God. Their repeated “Appeal to Heaven,” 15 times over the eight year conflict, spiritually solidified the diverse colonies and made possible their united Declaration of Independence and miraculous victory over Great Britain. It could also be argued that it laid the foundation for the Constitution and Bill of Rights and the framework for what has been the freest, most blessed nation in history, all due to God’s grace....

In 1794, when things were at their worst Baptist pastor Isaac Backus addressed another urgent plea for prayer for revival to pastors of every Christian denomination in the United States. Pastors grasped the urgency and adopted his plan. America became interlaced with a network of prayer meetings, and churches set aside the first Monday of each month to pray. Before long, revival came, and the Second Great Awakening ensued. Dr. Orr asks, “Is not this what is missing so much from all our evangelistic efforts: explicit agreement, visible unity, unusual prayer?

"We confess that we have come to the end of ourselves and are in a desperate condition. Having examined the trends in our culture, Church and especially among the young, we are grieved. We consider catastrophic a future without The Spirit's extraordinary intervention. At the same time, we are encouraged by testimonies from The Scriptures, American history and current evidences of an impending great work of grace. Historic opportunities lie before us. For these reasons, we invite followers of Christ in every corner of our land, of every race and denominational background, to unite in common pursuits to see God glorified, His Church revived and our nation transformed by an awakening to the Supremacy of our Lord Jesus Christ."
- Awakening America Leadership Summit, Northampton, Massachusetts, 2008

1) Acknowledge the authority of Scripture
2) Acknowledge the need for Spiritual rebirth
3) Acknowledge the need for personal repentance and renewed faith in Christ

We, the Church, must act quickly and become the salt that stings the moral wounds and flavors the grace of our Savior, Jesus Christ. As he said in Matthew chapter 5 verse 13 :

“‘You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.’

“. . . the foundations of our National policy will be laid in the pure and immutable principles of private morality . . . we ought to be no less persuaded that the propitious smiles of Heaven, can never be expected on a nation that disregards the eternal rules of order and right, which Heaven itself has ordained.”
- George Washington, 1789
