How To Store And Generate Emergency Power For Your Home

Your Car and Inverter as Emergency Power Source

* 150W "pocket" inverter plugs into aux power outlet, but those outlets can only draw 150W max.

* 750W (Cobra) Inverter

Clamps directly to battery and can deliver up to 750W.

A cars alternator at idle will produce 400W. If you draw more than that, anything above 400W will come from the battery (a battery drain).

Mount inverter to a ply-wood base. Attach to battery. Run (orange) extension cord from inverter into house. Should have a kilo-watt-meeter.

Perfect for battery chargers, cell phone charger, laptop charger, radios...

Power Rules of Thumb

  • 30W draw can run 8 hours without the car on, then charge (car at idle) 30-45 minutes
  • 30-80W draw, start the car for 15 minutes every half hour
  • 100-200W, run car for 30 minutes every 30 minutes
  • 200+W, have car idling


Fridge/Freezer pulls about 200W. Run with car at at idle for 1 hour maybe 2 or 3 times a day.

Coffee pot draws 1600W!! Use the gas stove!

Fuel Storage Rules of Thumb

  • * Car with a full tank can idle for about 24 hours
  • Use 5 gal. racing fuel jugs (can paint red with Krylon fusion paint)

    - don't use red plastic EPA gas cans.
  • Can gind 15 gal. HDPE plastic drums (with wrench)
  • Best fuel syphon: 3/8 inch inlet marine squeeze ball, 10 foot of 3/8 inch fuel line (from auto parts store), cut into 4 foot and 6 foot sections.
