Disciple: Notes from Stuart Briscoe

Notes on being a disciple of Jesus Christ from Stuart Briscoe's message delivered at Maranatha Bible and Missionary Conference Week 5, 2017.

The word disciple is used 100's of times in the new testament. One of the first actions Jesus took in His ministry was to recruit disciples.

Disciple: a leaner, following a teacher; an imitator of the teacher. "And [Jesus] said to them, 'Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.' Immediately they left their nets and followed him." Matthew 4:18-22

A disciple lives in the Word of God. "So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, 'If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:31-32

abide: live in, feel at home in.

  1. revere it deeply
  2. resort to it constantly
  3. respond to it appropriately

know the truth: intimate knowledge of it.
"Jesus said to him, 'I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'" John 14:6

"Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart, since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God; for
'All flesh is like grass
and all its glory like the flower of grass.
The grass withers,
and the flower falls,
but the word of the Lord remains forever'.
And this word is the good news that was preached to you."
1 Peter 1:22-23

The unbelieving world is living in darkness, and needs disciples to lead them to the light. "'And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed'" John 3:19-20

Jesus is the light! "Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, 'I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.'" John 8:12

Be a disciple of Jesus Christ. Live in His word. Make disciples. Show and tell people the answers in His word. Share the good news of Jesus Christ.
