Truth: The Human Heart and Lessons of good and evil from Wonder Woman

Lessons on the sinful condition of the human heart, the reality of the battle of good and evil, and how love wins!

God

The fictional story of Wonder Woman is rooted in Greek Mythological gods (as in little "g" false gods).

myth: an idea or story that is believed by many people but that is not true.

Paul confronted these little "g" mythical god's when he was in Athens:

So Paul, standing in the midst of the Areopagus, said: “Men of Athens, I perceive that in every way you are very religious. For as I passed along and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription: ‘To the unknown god.’ What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you. The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything. And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us, for

“‘In him we live and move and have our being’;
as even some of your own poets have said,
“‘For we are indeed his offspring.’

Being then God's offspring, we ought not to think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by the art and imagination of man. The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent, because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.”
Acts 17:16-34

Truth: We know the True God because of the obvious reality of His creation and the works and resurrection from the dead of Jesus Christ!

And in Ephesus Paul's disciples were attacked because merchants selling idols of false gods were angry that they were losing business when people learned the truth of the living God of the universe!

About that time there arose no little disturbance concerning the Way. For a man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought no little business to the craftsmen... and said, “Men, you know that from this business we have our wealth. And you see and hear that not only in Ephesus but in almost all of Asia this Paul has persuaded and turned away a great many people, saying that gods made with hands are not gods... So the city was filled with the confusion, and they rushed together into the theater, dragging with them Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians who were Paul's companions in travel.”
Acts 19

Truth: False little "g" gods and idols make false prophets a lot of money, but only God can do true miracles! (Acts 19:11-17)

In reality, the mythical story of Ares, the evil god, is similar to the history of Satan and his pride. The stories and battles of the little "g" gods is really more like the reality of the battle of the Angels and Demons.

Now war arose in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon. And the dragon and his angels fought back, but he was defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.”
Revelation 12:7-12

So God has revealed to us that there is a...

Battle of Good versus Evil

The battle within

There is a clear lesson in the Wonder Woman movie: The wars and violence and hatred in the world come from man's sinful heart. "it’s clear that people have both peace and war in them, light and darkness, and that they must choose to believe in the light." (1)

For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me.
Romans 7:18-25

Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these.
Galatians 5:19-21

Truth: All that is bad in the world is caused by the sinful rebellious heart of man. God made the world and "it was very good." (Genesis 1:31) But man, Adam and Eve, sinned by disobeying God and brought suffering to the world. "Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life." (Genesis 3:17)

Love wins!

John 3:16 says “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” God’s only begotten son humbled himself and became a man in order that he might pay the price for our sins. Romans 10:9 says “if you confess with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” It is only by the one True God that we are saved! Repent and Rejoice in God’s love!

On the cross, God's love won!

For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 5:6-8

The battle without

Because of the curse of sin, Our King, Jesus, warns us that until His return we live in a broken world with crime, war, and disaster.

You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places.
Matthew 24:6-7

Jesus tells us not to be alarmed, that wars and natural disasters will happen. We think our family needs to be prepared. For God’s glory, we need to be prepared to weather the storm, to rebuild, to care for others, and to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with those in need.

So, God calls us to...

Be a Super Hero

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
Ephesians 2:10

"WONDER WOMAN is a comic book fantasy adventure where Diana, the princess of the Amazons, has always longed to fight and protect those who can’t protect themselves... they must sacrifice for people and fight for those who cannot fight, for the woman and the children... Diana believes her purpose is to save those in need, to bring peace and love, and specifically to fight Ares (Satan)." (1)

"She sees suffering and yearns to help.
She sees injustice and longs to fix it.
... She knows that one must confront evil boldly and, at times, with lethal fury." (2)

"The Bible is filled with passages that speak to our obligation to care for our fellow human beings. From the many commands in the books of Moses enjoining love of family, neighbors and even strangers, to Jesus’ parable of the Good Samaritan, the injunction to care for others is inescapable... Christ said, “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends” (John 15:13). This is the standard of divine love. It required God to sacrifice what was most precious to Him for the temporal and eternal well being of all human-kind (see John 3:16). Though on a much reduced scale, he expects us to do the same." (3)

sacrifice: (give up) "the act of giving up something that is valuable to you in order to help someone else"

duty: (responsibility) "something that you have to do because it is part of your job, or something that you feel is the right thing to do"

justice: (fairness) "fairness in the way people are dealt with" (law) "the system of laws in a country that judges and punishes people"

compassion: "a strong feeling of sympathy and sadness for other people’s suffering ... and a desire to help"

Love wins!

Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends.
1 Corinthians 13:4-9a

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.
Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints,
