John Knox - Scottish Reformer

Notes from "John Knox: Fearless Faith" by Steven J. Lawson

Knox stated his conviction that the people of a nation invite divine punishment upon themselves if they follow the sins of the ruler. He cited multiple Old Testament examples in support of his position, arguing that loyal subjects are duty-bound to resist the tyranny of an evil prince... Knox insisted that the Queen was subject to the law of God and that that law required the death penalty for those guilty of murder. These messages led to an uprising against Mary, the first modern revolution by the people against the purported ‘divine right of kings.’
