Education: Conservative Perspective Abolish the Department of Education - 2017

Excerpts on Education from "A More American Conservatism" Imprimis, December 2016, Volume 45, Number 12, by Larry P. Arnn, https://imprimis.hillsdale.edu/a-more-american-conservatism/ My bold highlights.

"Trump has called for the abolition of the Department of Education, as did Reagan. By contrast, both Presidents Bush sought to strengthen that Department. Trump has nominated the splendid Betsy DeVos to be secretary of the Department, and she is a fighter for every kind of school choice. The federal government spends seven or eight percent of its money on education, and its method is typical of the federal intrusion into local matters: it gives money from the federal treasury to states and localities on condition. The conditions are myriad, confusing, and usually ugly when they can be understood. Title IV of the Higher Education Act governs federal student aid, and it numbers around 500 pages. A lawyer for our college told me once that I would be unable to read it, because he himself cannot read it, for which reason his firm keeps a specialist who is the only person he knows who understands what it says. For this reason alone, it would be a grand thing to get rid of the Department of Education.

Happy New Year! Now, let's get to work!

Limited government works when the citizens are self-governing. "Only a virtuous people," declared Benjamin Franklin, "are capable of freedom." (1)

"Grassroots" is a term meaning to start from the ground up. Subsidiarity is a technical term for efforts to keep governance as local as possible. Starting with self-governance, family governance, church, neighborhood... on up to city, state, and so on. (2)

Property Rights: A Fundamental Human Right

Excerpt from Imprimis: Property Rights and Religious Liberty

"James Madison wrote an essay on property in 1792 in which he connects property rights to all human rights, including freedom of religion, speech, and the press. Madison defines property as 'every thing to which a man may attach a value and have a right, and which leaves to every one else the like advantage' (emphasis in original)—the italicized words distinguish the natural rights of the Declaration of Independence from the kind of rights proclaimed by socialism, such as the right to a guaranteed income or to free education, which by definition make claims on the property of others...

End Times, Rapture, so what?

"The last days are here... let our lot be genuine life in Jesus Christ. Do not let anything catch your eye besides Him."
- Ignatius (Bishop of Antioch, appointed by Peter, companion of John, arrested by the Roman government and thrown to wild beasts in the Colosseum)

If you find yourself obsessing over the news and sermons on the end times, maybe it's time to ask yourself, "so what?"

So what if it is the end times? What does that mean to me and my faith? So what should I be thinking? So what should I be doing?

So...

Terror, Persecution, and Unity in our diversity

I was thinking about international events, the Berlin terror attack yesterday and church bombings in Egypt last week, in particular, and request that we pray for those that are victims of terrorism and persecuted for their faith.

Also pray for America and Illinois that we might find unity in our diversity, and what do we have to be united on? The Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. Liberty and Justice for all. E Pluribus Unum: out of many, one.

This is such an important message that transcends so much of what divides us.

The Force: A Force for Good! Star Wars and the real battle of good vs evil.

BE A FORCE FOR GOOD!

Good vs. Evil, Jedi vs. Darkside, Spirit vs Flesh... there is a battle of good and evil.

Evil, the darkside

Announcement Day

Lord, Jesus, our God,
You said "apart from me you can do nothing." (John 15:15)

In faith we embrace Your words, Lord, and implore Your goodness. Help us to carry out the work we are about to begin, and bring it to completion.

I request good health, wisdom, courage, peace, and sound judgment for Mr. Stufflebeam, his family, staff, and supporters.
I pray for a good turn out of journalists and favorable reporting.

Advent

Advent: A holy season of the Christian church, also known as the season of Christmas.

A season of celebration of the birth of the Savior Jesus Christ, and of expectant and hopeful waiting for His return!

Adventus is the Latin word for ‘coming’, and is the exact Latin equivalent for the Greek word parousia, commonly used in reference to the Second Coming.” (1)

Discipleship: Scripture Story and Life Story Application

"The Bible is God's story, his declaration of the way the world really is. The Bible is not an exhaustive history of the world, but it narrates, in a progressive way over time, the story of God's actions and what they mean for the people of God."

"Craig Bartholomew and Michael Goheen helpfully structure the biblical narrative as a six-act play:"

December - Saint Nickolas (A.K.A. Santa Clause)

He is often called Saint Nickolas or Nickolas of Myra, where he served as a bishop. He was born in Turkey around 270 and died on December 6, 343. Today his bones lay at rest in a Basilica in Bari, Italy...

He was known for his generosity and often gave gifts secretly to those in need but he didn’t limit his gift giving to children...
